Marriage is a bond between two people wherein the officially specify their intention to stay with each other forever.

There are several reasons as to why people get married but the basis of it is usually a deep sense of love and respect for each other. Marriage is a way of showing an eternal love for each other in front of society, family and friends. It’s a sort of celebrating a bond of togetherness.

Sometimes though, there are other reasons as to why people marry. Although they may not be very ethical reasons, they are still very much in effect and use. A few of the more common reasons as to why people choose to get married are listed below:

For convenience sake

Many times, a couple gets married because it’s convenient. For instance, they might have known each other for a long time and they haven’t found any one else suitable enough to get married to. They may hit a “marriageable” age wherein they feel that starting a family and sharing a life with someone is now a need and so they get married because it’s convenient.

To honor a pact

Many times couples in the west form a pact when they are younger wherein they specify that if neither of the two find a right match by the time they attain a certain age then they pledge to get married to each other. This is quite common amongst yesterday’s these days and was also referred to a few years ago in the famous Hollywood movie – My Best Friend’s wedding.

Because it’s the “right” time to get married

Many people believe that they should get married within a certain age. Some may believe that getting married before 30 years is right and some may believe that getting married before 40 is ideal. Everyone sets their own limits and sometimes when they are at the brink of what they considered the right age to be married within they may choose to get married.

Due to social pressures

Sometimes, families pressure the youngsters to get married. This is highly evident in families in the East where parents believe that their children should be married and settled within a certain age. So people succumb to the pressures and end of getting married.

Because they want to

Sometimes it’s as simple as this. The couple wants to get married and spend their life together. It may not be love but they may have a greater understanding of each other and they may enjoy spending time together thus it results in them wanting to marry.

Because they don’t want to spend time apart

International job offers have resulted in several long distance relationships. Sometimes a couple may be tired of a long distance relationship and may want to shorten the distance. So marriage becomes an option whereby they can live together and enjoy their future together.

To get a visa / citizenship of a particular country

Sometimes people marry locals of another country so that they can get visa’s or citizen-ships easily. By marriage the person belonging to a foreign country automatically becomes a citizen of the local person’s country. Although this is unethical because the core of a healthy marriage is love, sometimes in life it is all about business at the end of the day.

Due to love

The core of a marriage should be love and fortunately there are many times that love results in marriage between two people. People choose to marry when they feel the person is right for them and will care for them no matter what happens. Although it is extremely rare to find real and ever lasting love these days, it does happen.

Because it was an arranged marriage

Sometimes people (this is highly evident in the East) get married because their marriage was arranged for them by their parents wherein the parents decided who their child would marry and when. The concept of arranged marriages may not be common in the U.S.A but in countries like India it is a very common part of life. Once a girl / guy reach a certain age, the parents immediately start looking for the ideal match for their daughter / son and fix the marriage based on what they think is the right one for their child.
